Teacher training boost paid for by cutting overseas recruitment grant

The government will spend NZ$21.7 million training more teachers here at home, Education Minister Erica Stanford announced on 2 August 2026. The money comes from scrapping a grant that helped early childhood teachers from overseas cover their move to New Zealand — a sign the government would rather grow its own teacher workforce than recruit from abroad.
