Fewer People Crossing the Sea to Britain, But Numbers Jump Under New Leader

About 14,526 people have crossed the sea to Britain in small boats so far this year — 43% fewer than last year. But since Andy Burnham became prime minister on July 20, 2,057 more have arrived. On July 30 alone, 752 people came — the busiest day of the year. Police fighting people-smuggling crime have more than doubled to nearly 800 officers.
