Fake Online Posts Led Thousands Into a Deadly Crossing

About 60,000 people, mostly young Moroccan men, crossed into Ceuta — a small piece of Spain on Morocco's coast — in July 2026; 67 died. Viral social media posts falsely claimed "Spain is open." The posts came from new accounts with thousands of likes. Arrivals found no food or shelter. Most turned back.
