California farmland may be sinking permanently from over-pumped groundwater, study finds

A July 2026 study in PNAS finds that pumping too much groundwater can permanently sink the land above it. Scientists had assumed the ground would rebound if water returned. Parts of California's Sacramento Valley may have passed that point of no return by 2021, with some areas sinking up to 50 centimeters.
