Low river water forces nuclear power plants to shut down

Nuclear plants need river water to stay cool. On July 29, 2026, Romania shut down both reactors at Cernavoda because the Danube ran too low. Hungary took one Paks reactor offline; PM Peter Magyar warned the rest may follow July 30 or 31. Paks supplies nearly half of Hungary's power. River flow is below a third of normal and still dropping.
