Three Firefighters Killed as Strong Winds Drive Wildfires Across Greece

Three Greek firefighters died on July 29, 2026, fighting wildfires on the island of Crete and in the Peloponnese region of southern Greece. Two more were lightly injured. Very strong winds — fast enough to knock trees over — spread the flames across several areas. Crews were still fighting the Crete fire a second day. The government set up temporary housing for people forced from their homes.
