Disease expert's plea to keep politics out of pandemic planning ignored by MPs

Disease expert Professor Michael Baker asked MPs on 29 July 2026 to stop playing politics and cooperate on planning for future pandemics. Within hours, MPs from all parties were blaming each other in Parliament instead. NZ First leader Winston Peters called the government's response "pathetic," and Baker's request was ignored.
