Working-Class Voters Care Less About Democracy as a Campaign Issue, Survey Finds

An NPR report on July 29, 2026, surveyed more than 5,000 Americans. Protecting democracy ranked near the bottom for working-class voters but near the top for liberal college graduates. Authors Joan C. Williams and Jared Abbott said Democrats should focus on pocketbook issues like wages and jobs rather than democracy to win back working-class voters.
