Government allows offshore oil search for first time since ban lifted

The government has let Australian company EnZed Energy search for oil and gas off the Taranaki coast for 12 years — the first such permit since a ban was lifted on 31 July. Resources Minister Shane Jones called it a "major milestone." The area covers 546 sq km near the Kupe gas field. The company will start by mapping the seabed, not drilling.
