Heat Dries Out Train Tracks Again, Forcing Slower Services

Network Rail will slow trains and change schedules across England from 3 August 2026. Hot, dry weather shrinks the clay soil under track banks, making rails shift. Similar steps were taken in summer 2025. Workers will add 49,000 tonnes of gravel to hold the tracks steady. The UK is now in its fourth heatwave of the year.
