Greyhound racing to be banned in New Zealand

Greyhound racing will become illegal in New Zealand from 1 August 2026. Racing Minister Winston Peters said injury and death rates among racing dogs were "unacceptably high." The Government first announced the shutdown in December 2024 after years of welfare concerns, including a 2021 review that warned the industry to improve.
