Huge Fires Force Over 200,000 People to Leave Their Homes in France and Spain

By July 25, 2026, more than 200,000 people had to leave their homes as large wildfires burned across France and Spain at the same time. In France, the number of people evacuated jumped from 10,000 on July 23 to 141,000 by July 24. Spain declared an emergency after 25,000 fled the Madrid area. Over 1,200 evacuees were elderly or disabled. France sent in the military; 42 firefighters were injured.
