UNESCO Labels Ancient West Bank Site Sebastia as Endangered Heritage

On July 24, 2026, UNESCO — the UN's culture agency — added Sebastia, an ancient city in the West Bank, to its list of endangered world heritage sites, under the label "State of Palestine." Israel, which left UNESCO in 2019, tried to block the move. Palestinian officials first requested the designation in 2012.
