
Whales' Strange Sunfish-Hitting Habit May Be Something They Teach Each Other
In the Gulf of California, scientists watched orcas — highly social whales — ram dead sunfish to pieces in July 2024 and again in September 2025, per the journal Frontiers in Ethology. Two sightings a year apart suggest this behavior may pass from whale to whale within family groups, much like other known orca traditions — not just a one-time event.
