EU Proposes Slowing Its Pollution Cuts by More Than Half
On July 17, 2026, the European Commission proposed slowing its annual pollution reduction rate from 4.4% to 1.7% after 2036 — less than 39% of the previous pace. The EU's 2040 target requires cutting emissions 90% below 1990 levels. The Commission has not explained how it will close the resulting gap.
