
Nicaragua Breaks Off Relations With Italy Over a 1970s Fugitive
Nicaragua ended its official relationship with Italy on July 16, 2026. Italy had asked Nicaragua to send back Alessio Casimirri, convicted in the 1978 kidnapping and murder of Prime Minister Aldo Moro. Casimirri holds six life sentences. He lives freely in Nicaragua, whose laws protect citizens from being sent to another country to face punishment.
