Ukraine's President Fires Defence Minister, Backs Top General

On July 16, 2026, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy fired his defence minister, Fedorov, saying Fedorov and the army's top general, Syrskyi, could not work together. Zelenskyy chose to keep the general. Over 1,000 people protested in Kyiv — only the second big anti-government protest since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
