John Esposito, Scholar Who Helped Americans Understand Islam, Dies at 86

John L. Esposito, a Georgetown professor who started a center for Muslim-Christian dialogue in 1993 and wrote over 50 books on Islam, died July 15, 2026, at 86. A Catholic who studied under a pioneering Muslim scholar, he was mourned by Malaysia's leader as "a true friend of the Islamic world."
