Ottawa stopped new applications to sponsor parents and grandparents on July 15, 2026. No new applicants can join the waiting list. Spokesperson Taous Ait said the pause aims to "restore balance across immigration programs and maintain public confidence." About 54,000 applications submitted in 2020 are still waiting in the system.
