New Zealand finds its first case of dangerous bird flu

New Zealand confirmed its first case of H5N1 bird flu on 15 July 2026, in a seabird found dead on a Wellington beach. Officials say no other animals or farm birds appear affected so far. This flu strain has spread worldwide since 2021, reaching Antarctica and Australia this month. New Zealand was one of the last places it had not reached.
