Parliament gets say over who becomes ambassador

MPs would gain power to block political ambassador appointments, the Foreign Affairs Committee recommends. Political candidates would attend public hearings; Parliament could reject them if unsuitable. Career diplomats promoted within the Foreign Office would not be affected. The change limits the Prime Minister's ability to hand out top diplomatic jobs to favoured allies.
