How digital fingerprints are helping catch AI-made images

Fact-checkers recently caught a fake hospital image of Senator McConnell by spotting an invisible fingerprint left behind by Google's AI image system. Instead of studying pixels for telltale signs of forgery, they now verify a hidden digital signature embedded when the image was created. The method works for images from Google and OpenAI, but leaves gaps for AI systems that don't participate.
