Computer Sales Drop as AI Grabs Memory Chips

Personal computer sales fell 5% in the second quarter of 2026, breaking a nine-quarter winning streak. The reason: AI systems need the same high-speed memory chips that ordinary computers use, and supply can't keep up. This shortage is expected to last until 2028 — much longer than typical chip shortages — and is forcing businesses to change how they buy computers.
