WeWard, a fitness app backed by Venus Williams, locks users out of social apps and games until they reach their daily step target. Most apps do the opposite—they're designed to keep you scrolling as long as possible so they can show you ads. WeWard makes money differently, through partnerships and sponsorships instead. The real question: whether adults will actually accept this friction the way parental controls attempt to with children, with mixed success so far.
