Denmark Uses NATO's Core Promise—Against America

Denmark's leader said NATO countries should protect Greenland from U.S. territorial claims at a summit on July 8. She invoked NATO's central rule: members defend each other if attacked. But she pointed it at the U.S., an ally, not an outside enemy. This has never happened before. NATO was built for external threats, not conflicts between members. It's unclear if other countries will actually go along.
