Austrian court convicts Syrian official of torture
A court in Vienna sentenced Khaled al-Halabi, who ran a Syrian secret police prison from 2011 to 2013, to eight years for torture and abuse. Survivors testified he ordered beatings and electric shocks. This is Austria's first trial of someone accused of crimes under Syria's former government—a rare step that signals willingness to hold distant officials accountable for serious human rights violations.
