China tests missile over the Pacific; New Zealand says it breaks the rules

China fired a missile from a submarine into the South Pacific on 6 July 2026. New Zealand had just a few hours' warning. Foreign Minister Winston Peters said it broke a treaty that keeps the region free of nuclear weapons. This is the second time China has done this in two years. Pacific Island nations objected to the first test in 2024.
