Sierra Leone Takes First Legal Action Against Child Marriage

Four men, including a girl's father and the man she was married to, are now on trial in Freetown for forcing a child into marriage. This is the first case under a new law passed earlier this year that makes child marriage a crime. Until now, Sierra Leone had no law against it—local customs allowed it. This case will show if courts will actually enforce the ban.
