Japan ready to step in as its currency weakens

Japan's government warned on June 18 it will defend its currency, the yen, which has been falling against the dollar. Officials said they could act "at any time." Japan has $1.2 trillion available to spend if needed. The real problem: interest rates make the dollar more attractive to traders. Warnings alone may not work—but nobody knows if Tokyo will actually spend that money.
