Wildlife in England and Wales may struggle for years after drought, the UK government warned. After the driest July since 1836, officials recorded 349 problems in 2026 like dead fish and slime on water. Natural England said nesting wetland birds and tiny water insects suffered as rich wet areas dried up. It will take months of steady rain to recover.
