Groups want UK investment fund turned into independent bank for big projects

Unions, green campaigners and experts ask UK ministers to remake the National Wealth Fund as an independent, world-leading public bank for long-term projects.

Started in July 2024 to bring private money into big public projects, it has £5.5bn a year to spend. Backers say freedom to borrow would fund longer projects before the 28 October budget.
