Israel Officially Recognizes Somaliland to Counter Attacks on Shipping

Israel officially recognized Somaliland in December 2025, becoming the first country to do so. Somaliland is a region in Africa that has governed itself for three decades but no other country had acknowledged it. Israel's recognition gives it potential footholds for monitoring the Red Sea, where a Yemeni militant group has attacked ships carrying Israeli goods.
