Former Competition Chief Says AI Firms Can Be Safe Without Teaming Up

Jonathan Kanter, who formerly led government efforts to keep competition fair and sued Google, Apple and Ticketmaster, said leading AI bosses should not get special permission to team up on safety. In a Decoder interview published Sept. 19, 2026, he said AI companies can make safe products while still competing, like rival carmakers adding seatbelts.
