Fewer People Reach Europe by Boat, but More Die Trying
Fewer people reached Europe by boat, but more died trying, the UN migration agency said Sept. 17. About 60,000 arrived so far in 2026, down 39% from about 98,000 last year. At least 2,292 died or vanished, up from 1,999. The real number is likely higher, as many boats vanish unseen, raising questions about rescue and monitoring.
