
Cuba Opens Its Economy to Big Changes
Cuba's ruling Communist Party approved major economic changes on June 17. Companies can now set their own wages, keep some profits, and trade directly with foreign countries. State-owned businesses can hold onto some foreign money they earn instead of turning it all over to the government—a move meant to ease shortages of fuel, food, and medicine. This is Cuba's biggest economic shift in decades.
