MP Burnham loses mayor job after by-election win

Andy Burnham won a seat in Parliament on 18 June 2026 and automatically lost his job as mayor of Greater Manchester. The law allowed him to run while mayor, but winning Parliament meant he had to step down. After seven years building a strong local profile, he starts as a junior MP.
