In Australia, 40 babies died over the 10 years to 2025 after catching syphilis from their mothers during pregnancy or birth, out of 113 such cases, UNSW Kirby Institute data show. The numbers raise hard questions about whether check-ups and tests during pregnancy are reaching all mothers.
