Ancient Star Cluster Survived Getting Torn Apart and Never Stopped Making Stars
Terzan 5, an old cluster of tightly packed stars near the center of our galaxy, should have been destroyed by gravity's pull long ago. Instead, it survived and kept enough gas to build four new generations of stars over billions of years. Observations from the Webb and Hubble telescopes, published 16 June 2026, show Terzan 5 is the first known example of this rare survival story.
