UK Defence Chief Quits Over Money Promise the Government Can't Keep

Britain's Defence Secretary John Healey stepped down on 11 June 2026 because the government won't spend enough on the military. Healey had promised NATO countries that Britain would spend 5% of its income on defence, but the Treasury says it can't afford that without cutting other services. The Prime Minister now plans to explain how the money will work before a NATO meeting in July.
