Why next year's Champagne may be a bit stronger

France will let Champagne makers produce the 2026 harvest at up to 15% alcohol, up from the normal 13% limit. Hot, dry weather made grapes sweet, like overripe fruit, and that sugar turns into more alcohol. The rule change is for 2026 only. The Comité Champagne says few bottles will pass 13%, ending near 13.1%-13.2% once bubbles are added.
