Defence Secretary resigns after failing to secure alternative funding plan

Defence Secretary John Healey quit on 13 June over disagreements with the Treasury about military spending. Before resigning, he had privately tried to join an international investment bank that would have allowed defence money to bypass the usual budget rules. The Treasury said no. His exit leaves the Defence Ministry without a permanent leader at a time of growing security concerns in Europe.
