GM Repurposes Car Battery Plants to Power AI Data Centers

General Motors is converting unused battery factories to produce sodium-ion cells—a cheaper alternative to lithium—for grid storage. These batteries will help power the enormous electricity demands of AI data centers. Sodium-ion works better for stationary storage than for cars, and the shift fills a critical shortage in available grid power that traditional utilities cannot meet fast enough.
