France's Secure Messaging Breach: The Problem Wasn't Encryption

France's government messaging app, Tchap, was hacked on 9 June 2026. A hacker gained access to one user account and downloaded roughly 643,000 messages. The real issue was sloppy access controls: once inside, the system didn't limit what one person could retrieve or flag suspicious activity. Even strong encryption can't protect you if the door locks poorly.
