India's Ruling Party Wins Control of West Bengal State
India's BJP party won 207 of 294 seats in West Bengal elections in May 2026, taking control from the opposing Trinamool Congress after fifteen years. With more than two-thirds of seats, the BJP can now change state laws on its own without needing coalition partners. West Bengal, which borders Bangladesh and other nations, gives the ruling party significant influence over border and welfare policy across the region.
