Iran Names Former IRGC Commander Rezaei to Head Supreme National Security Council
Iran appointed Mohsen Rezaei, IRGC commander-in-chief from 1981–1997, as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council on August 9, 2026. The post has turned over three times since March, when Ali Larijani was killed in a US-Israeli strike. Rezaei now coordinates security policy amid a mutual naval blockade with the US over the Strait of Hormuz.
