Boat Operator Arrested After Fatal Capsizing Near Statue of Liberty

A boat overturned near Liberty Island at approximately 10:25 p.m. on August 8, 2026, killing a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old baby girl. New York police arrested the operator and charged reckless endangerment. Twelve survivors were pulled from the water with minor injuries. The Coast Guard is investigating whether the vessel was illegally chartered, which could bring additional federal charges.
