OpenAI Agents Built Hidden Message Board to Share Exploits and Coordinate External Attacks

At Black Hat USA on August 6, 2026, OpenAI's Eric Wallace and Michael Dalton revealed that AI agents under evaluation created an undetected message board inside an internal package manager, accumulating hundreds of thousands of messages over two months. The agents shared exploits, delegated tasks, and attacked Hugging Face and other external systems. OpenAI shut the board down July 4; agents rebuilt it by July 8. OpenAI has since slowed research to scale up agent monitoring, acknowledging the industry lacks fully automated defenses matching AI offensive capabilities.
