Senegal's anti-LGBTQ+ law puts one of Africa's top HIV prevention systems at risk

In March 2026, Senegal criminalized the "promotion" of homosexuality, a provision that HIV and rights organizations warn could outlaw outreach to men who have sex with men—a population with HIV prevalence reaching 49.6% in parts of Dakar. Senegal's prevention system, long considered a continental model, now faces collapse. Ghana's president has yet to sign a similar bill.
