Supreme Court strikes down law shielding ethics commissioner from judicial review

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled unanimously that Section 66 of the Conflict of Interest Act, which made ethics commissioner decisions final and unreviewable by courts, is unconstitutional. Chief Justice Wagner wrote that judicial supervisory jurisdiction over public authority is constitutionally guaranteed. The ruling allows Democracy Watch to challenge a 2021 ethics report clearing Justin Trudeau in the WE Charity affair.
