Governor-General: adults know less about democracy than schoolkids and new citizens

Governor-General Sam Mostyn says the "most woeful lack of understanding" of Australia's democratic system is among adults, not schoolchildren. In a Guardian Australia podcast interview released July 31, 2026, Mostyn said students and newly sworn citizens have the best grasp of how government works — and called the decline a "growing catastrophe" threatening democratic foundations.
